The Scarlets' dream start to the season was ended last week by the Ospreys and Smith believes that his side will have to weather a determined response from the Welsh club on Saturday.
But with the Italians brooding over near misses, and their 11th place in the league, Smith sees the Scarlets' visit to the Stadio di Monigo as the perfect opportunity to get their second win but recognised it would be hard.
"We know they will want to put right last week's loss but we are tired and fed up of coming close so I think it will be a battle not to be missed," said Smith.
"It should be a great spectacle, like our matches against Leinster and Ospreys, because Scarlets are a very strong side.
"They've always had the idea of playing rugby with a freedom of style and by passing the ball around.
"They have great attacking threats like (Rhys) Priestland, (George) North and Jonathan Davies.
"But now they have reinforced their pack and are more of a complete team.
"They have a coach (Simon Easterby) who used to play in the back row and you see his effect because they are more forward-orientated.
"They have always had great capacity in the backs but now they a very balanced team, with young players who have a lot of potential and desire."
