However Smith insists Edinburgh's returning internationals will not be affected by Scotland's disappointing Six Nations campaign.
He said: "I prefer not to rationalise it. I don't think [the PRO12 results] are good enough and I don't think we want to be here next year. It's something we need to change and we'll know in a year's time if we have changed it.
"Disappointment or success at that level is irrelevant to us. We are a separate entity. The players will switch off from Scotland stuff and focus on us when they come to Edinburgh.
"They've done that really well in training over the past week or two."
Meanwhile fly-half Greig Laidlaw admits it will be good for Edinburgh to take a break from domestic action after their recent struggles have seen them drop to 11th in the RaboDirect PRO12.
He said: "When things don't go well it's good to get a change.
"Back at the start of our Heineken campaign we had been struggling in the league, so the Heineken games refreshed us as a team and we now find ourselves in a good position.
"With the kind of players we have and the attitude in the squad, we'll play to the end of games.
"I think there's a belief in the Edinburgh team that so long as we trust our techniques and stick to the systems we can win."
