And it backfired as Connacht ran out 26-21 winners to leave Ulster just outside the top four in the RaboDirect PRO12.
However, despite the changes McLaughlin was not about to begrudge Connacht the victory, believing his side just weren't up for the fight.
"The lads tried very hard. Connacht are a very difficult side to beat at their place," the Ulster coach said.
"All credit to them. A great victory for them. We have no complaints at all. Our guys fought really hard but on the night, it just wasn't enough.
"I thought we were a little too soft and we gave up too many easy tries.
"We didn't get on the front foot enough."
