And after finally overcoming his arm problems, the 36-year-old was gearing up for last weekend's LV= Cup match at Gloucester but never made the team-sheet after once again breaking down in training.
This time it was a tweak to his hamstring, but Blues forwards coach Justin Burnell is hopeful the 99-cap international will be able to overcome his latest troubles before next Friday's match with Connacht.
"Martyn has had a bit of a setback," said Burnell.
"He was set to captain the team up in Gloucester, but he picked up a bit of a knock on the leg and had a tweak on his hamstring.
"It's frustrating times for him. He had done his rehab and he was training so well. We are giving him 100 per cent support.
"You don't get 99 caps from being a complete amateur. He's a true professional and it's certainly not from the lack of trying to get back on the field.
"Thankfully, it's nothing major this time. It's only a minor thing. He's back in training now. We've got to make sure he gets through training this week, then he will be up for selection for the Connacht game.
"Hopefully he will come into full contention for that match and the Ulster game."
