In fact, the Dubliners scored just 27 tries in the league which was only more potent than bottom side Connacht.
And new head coach Schmidt, who has taken over from Michael Cheika, has made it clear that his first priority has been to help Leinster rediscover their try-scoring edge.
"Our attack is one thing I really want to improve upon," said Schmidt.
"I was looking at last season and we scored the second least amount of tries in the league. That area is one of the targets we have set ourselves.
"I want to see the lads cross the line a few more times and try to construct our play a bit better to be able to do that.
"Leinster have built a strong defence and we'd like to maintain that level of defence.
"We won't open up at all costs by any means but we have to be smart with the ball and be more efficient when the opportunities arise.
"We just need to keep growing our attack especially with the calibre of players we have."
Schmidt certainly has the material to work with in a mouth-watering back division which includes British & Irish Lions stars Brian O'Driscoll, Rob Kearney and Luke Fitzgerald.
And the New Zealander believes he needs to increase the depth in the squad to ease the burden on their Irish contingent at the Royal Dublin Showgrounds.
"I don't think we need to transform a player like Brian. He delivers what he delivers and he does that very well," added Schmidt.
"We know we will have limited time with Brian as he's a high-profile international player who has played a lot of rugby. We will have to manage him through to the World Cup with an eye on his game-time.
"So I guess the bigger challenge for me is to bring through younger lads like Eoin O'Malley, Fergus McFadden and Eamonn Sheridan in behind."
