Jones kicked an impressive 22 points in the 37-32 home loss to Glasgow Warriors as he became the leading scorer in the history of both the Scarlets and Llanelli.
The British & Irish Lions fly-half passed Andy Hill's mark of 2596 points set in the 1970s but couldn't prevent the Scarlets suffering their 13th defeat of the league season.
"I was delighted to achieve that but I would have been a little bit happier if we'd won the game," said Jones of his record-breaking feat.
"Obviously the record is something special and I enjoyed that moment.
"I was conscious of how many points I needed going into the game and I think it was my first try of the season for the Scarlets as well, so it was nice to achieve it that way."
The record comes 14 years after the Welsh international made his senior debut for Llanelli.
The 32-year-old is now in his second spell with the Scarlets since the inception of regional rugby in 2003 after he enjoyed a two-year spell in the Top 14 with French giants Clermont Auvergne between 2004 and 2006.
There had been plenty of speculation linking Jones with a move away from the Parc-y-Scarlets for next season but the veteran playmaker has since committed his future to the region by signing a one-year contract extension.
Jones admits that things haven't gone to plan as far as success on the field is concerned this season but he remains positive that he and his team-mates can turn things around in the 2010/11 campaign.
"It's a work in progress I think is the best way to describe it for us," added Jones, who has been a key figure in helping the region blood a number of young prospects over the last two seasons.
"I've been fortunate to be part of some great teams and I've enjoyed my career down here and it's been a special place to have played.
"Hopefully next year we can go on to achieve a few more points but more importantly get us back to winning ways and I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead for us next season."
