Ulster crush English aristocrats

The 1999 European Champions secured a famous 28-10 victory over one of English rugby's most-successful teams as they finished their Heineken Cup campaign with a bang.

Tries from Andrew Trimble, Darren Cave and Paddy Wallace guided to Ulster to a famous double following October's victory over the same opposition at Ravenhill.

Young fly-half Niall O'Connor added 13 points with the boot courtesy of three penalties and two conversions as Ulster made it four wins from six in Pool 4.

Ulster's cause was undoubtedly helped by the sending off Bath lock Danny Grewcock for an alleged stamp on Stephen Ferris eight minutes before half-time, but the manner in which Brian McLaughlin's men approached the game suggested victory would have been theirs regardless.

And while the convincing win wasn't quite enough to secure a quarter-final place in the Heineken Cup, it could yet see their European dream continue courtesy of a place in the last eight of the Amlin Challenge Cup.

Ulster travelled to England's West Country knowing they needed to secure a four-try win of their own and hope that Edinburgh could beat Stade Francais by more than seven points at Murrayfield to help them snatch top spot in the pool.

In the end, they fell just short. They managed three tries but not the four required to secure a maximum five points, and, while their Magners League colleagues did them a favour by toppling the Parisian giants 9-7, the two-point margin of defeat handed Stade a losing bonus.
