Wales call is 'unbelievable' says young Osprey

The 19-year-old wing is yet to make a Magners League appearance this season and has only featured in a total of six league fixtures in his two-and-a-half seasons as a member of the Ospreys first-team squad.

His only start so far this term has come in the LV= Cup against Northampton back in November and Phillips admits his inclusion in Warren Gatland's 35-man squad for next month's Six Nations was a huge surprise.

"It's unbelievable really. If you asked me a month ago 'do you think you'll be playing for Wales in the Six Nations' my answer would have been no," Phillips told BBC Wales.

"I was looking forward to playing for Wales Under-20s and to have the call...in the first team is unbelievable."

Having seen his 2008/09 season ended prematurely with a dislocated shoulder in March, Phillips' only goal was to get back on the field of play with Principality Premiership side Neath and the Ospreys as soon as possible.

Instead his form for the Welsh All Blacks in the semi-professional league has seen him catapulted into the Wales set up alongside one of his heroes - fellow Osprey Shane Williams.

"Just to have my name next to Shane's name is something I wouldn't have thought of," added the Wales U16, U18 and U20 star.

"Growing up watching him playing for Wales and the Ospreys and then moving on training with him with the Ospreys and now training with him with Wales and pushing for a place is, again, unbelievable.

"I sustained injury last season, so thinking of coming back this season, playing for Wales U20s again and then having the Wales call is mad.

"I've been named in the squad and obviously I see myself as giving it a go in training and things, pushing for a spot and hopefully if things go well you never know what's round the corner."
