"All eyes will be on Ross Rennie. He's had continuous knee problems - a legacy perhaps of his years as a top skier - but if he can stay fit for a protracted period he'll be Scotland's No.7," Chalmers told the Scotsman.
"That's a big call given John Barclay's form last season but Rennie's ball-winning and defensive capabilities, his work rate and skills make him too good to ignore."
Rennie signed a two-year contract extension at Murrayfield in May and has the opportunity to stake his claim for his Scottish place over the next month before Scotland begin their Autumn international series against New Zealand on Saturday, November 13.
