The Blues crossed the Connacht line just the once through centre Casey Laulala, with the remaining 17 points coming from the boot of Dan Parks.
The hosts struggled to find any continuity in a game blighted by the wet conditions at the Cardiff City Stadium and Young admitted improvements need to be made despite the Blues' impressive league position.
"It was a win and that's the major positive", said Young.
"We all realise that wasn't the performance we were looking for. It was by far our worst all year. Things weren't anywhere near the quality they've been in previous weeks.
"We had a short turn-around and a lack of preparation but that's no excuse. We have to be better, end of.
"We all realise we're not going to play well every game and the positive is we won.
"We have to give Connacht credit, they were a really workman like team. But I don't think they caused us any problems apart from when we gave them the ball from turnovers or handling errors. When they actually had the ball they didn't look like breaking us.
"It's a win but certainly everyone realises we have to be better."
