And while his last appearance may have been towards the back end of last season, the injury has been an even more long-term one, with his career having been continually interrupted for the past 18 months.
The 29-year-old underwent a long list of treatments and was finally forced to opt for surgery that has seen him play no part in Edinburgh's Magners League campaign so far this term.
But the Scotland international finally received some positive news last week when he was given the all clear to feature as a guest for Watsonians in their Scottish Premier One win over Stirling County.
And while Webster admits he still has a long way to go before he returns to the level he was at two years ago, he is delighted to be back doing what he does best.
"I wanted to help Watsonians as much as possible but, from a selfish point of view, it was really important to get a run out - to keep my sanity and remind me that I'm still a rugby player," Webster told The Scotsman.
"I feel like I've been training and running around for a long time now, so it was a natural progression for me to get a bit of game time.
"I felt okay. I've done a lot of swimming and biking, but nothing is like rugby. I felt really good running around on the pitch, and I'm really pleased with that.
"When you've been injured for a long time, fighting for fitness can be really tough, but once you get there you have the challenge of getting in the team and playing your best rugby.
"Selection for Edinburgh is obviously Rob Moffat's decision, but I'm just happy I'm fit and available."
