Campbell looking for more from Glasgow

Leinster are the visitors to Hughenden for the season's final round of league matches. If Glasgow win it they could finish fourth in the table and, consequently, earn a home tie in the Celtic Cup quarter-finals a fortnight later.

"It would be fantastic for Glasgow to achieve fourth spot and have a home tie in the cup," Hugh Campbell, Glasgow's head coach, commented today in looking back and ahead. "After an outstanding away display against Llanelli our confidence should be high."

He acknowledged that Llanelli were not at their best on Saturday. "Llanelli, despite having their strongest available squad, did not perform to the standard you would expect."

The Stradey Park faithful have known nothing like in Llanelli's long history. It was the highest score ever recorded against the club, and it was, too, the first time they have conceded more than five tries in a match.

"On many occasions Glasgow have failed to punish teams who under-perform like that," the coach added. "This time we not only created chances but also took the opportunities that were presented to us."

Glasgow's Lamont brothers, Rory and Sean, scored five of the seven tries at Stradey Park. Three of them were by Rory and two by Sean, who will be making his fiftieth appearance for Glasgow in Saturday's Hughenden match against Leinster.

Hugh Campbell acknowledged that the Irish visitors on Saturday evening have to be respected. "Leinster, with six selected Lions in their squad, are obviously not to be under-estimated," he pointed out.

Leinster's tally of Lions is twice that allocated to Scotland. Gordon Bulloch, the Glasgow hooker and Scotland captain, is one his country's three Lions. The Glasgow coach ended his comments on that note. "Congratulations to Gordon on his Lions selection. It's a great honour for Glasgow rugby to have someone in the Lions' squad, especially with so few from the Scotland team."

Glasgow have already qualified for the Celtic Cup quarter-finals, but a five-try win on Saturday evening may not in itself be enough to gain a home tie. Llanelli, Dragons, and Edinburgh have to slip up to let Glasgow through into fourth place. Llanelli are away to Ulster on Friday night whereas the two others have Saturday matches - Dragons at home to Connacht, and Edinburgh visiting Munster.
